Getting Older
04:18
|
|||
you're getting older
everything's a little slow
your fingers shake and the
morning makes you feel so low
you're getting older
you feel it when you bend your knees
they creak and crack and your
aching back gives you no relief
your body's breaking down and now
you're running out of time
it's hard to find the strength to persevere
the candle's burning faster and
the world has passed you by
don't you know it's all downhill from here?
you're getting older
you thought you would have been prepared
but the kids have changed and their
thoughts so strange leave you lost and scared
you're getting older
and don't it make you oh so mad
it's finally clear after all these years
that the world's gone bad
the things that you remember
from a life so long ago
are dust and picture frames upon the wall
the anger and confusion
at this unfamiliar world
are easily explained 'cause after all
you're getting older
I'm getting older
I laugh it off and play it cool
the sands of time and the strawberry wine
can be so cruel
but in the end dear
I maintain a rosy view
'cause I'm so glad at the luck I had
to get old with you
the things that you remember
from a life so long ago
are dust and picture frames upon the wall
the anger and confusion
at this unfamiliar world
are easily explained 'cause after all
you're getting older
you're getting older

Way Back Home
02:55
|
|||
I've been drifting like an autumn leaf
carried up and away
from Chicago down to New Orleans
well you should know that I've been counting the days, now
'til the night when we're together again
I'm tired of being on my own
well I don't know how and I don't know when
but I know I'll make it honey
all the way back home
I haven't been the way you needed me
sleeping behind the wheel
I must admit to taking liberties in my
interpretation of the way that you feel, now
and I know that I'm in trouble again
bringing my work life home
well I've got that negative energy and it's draining me
I've gotta leave it on the phone
I changed my music in Munich and Japan
searching for truth in a harmony
ran into trouble with a rubber band
I bounced back and I shifted the key, now
and tonight we'll be together again
dancing in the dark alone
well you gave me a chance to make amends
and I finally got started
on the way back home
yes, I finally got started
on the way back home
yes, I finally got started
on the way back home

Sirius
03:23
|
|||
oh, what a marvel when Sirius sparkles
on a moonless night
the surf rumbles and the fog tumbles
down the mountainside
you know that just around the corner
brave Orion has his bowstring drawn
while the bull stands strong
with his fiery eye
in the winter sky
backs to the ground in our seaside town
I feel impermanent
the smell of the brine, eucalyptus and pine
beneath the firmament
let's try inventing constellations
telling stories, chasing satellites
through the cool, clear night
while the bonfire burns
and the world still turns

Lighthouse Keeper
08:04
|
|||
I remember when I landed in the tender's dory
the oar-man turned to me, said "don't you worry,
don't let the truth keep you from telling a story
spare no detail, share no glory"
now I'm just another lonely lighthouse keeper
watch the ships go passing by
boil a fish for dinner, I'm just a simple sinner
waiting for the day I die
now I'm just another lonely lighthouse keeper
stoke the fire from the morning to the night
watch the fog and keep the lamp a-burning bright
take a walk along the shore of suds and foam
waiting for the day I get back home
now I'm just another lonely lighthouse keeper
waiting for the after-life
and I'm just another cold and restless sleeper
pining for my loving wife
now I'm just another lonely lighthouse keeper
after a while they brought the wife and kids ashore
I couldn't bear to be without them anymore
for a moment, things were happy on the island
then the darkness came on the horizon
now I'm just another lonely lighthouse keeper
shovel coal to keep us warm
saving up the matches, batten down the hatches
try to bear this coming storm
now I'm just another lonely lighthouse keeper
I came to and saw the clouds had moved along
somehow I knew right then that everything was wrong
when I tried to tell the wife I loved her truly
my sweet Annie, she just looked right through me
now I'm just another lonely lighthouse keeper
seems I bit the dust this time
but you'll never see me let that grinning reaper
take me from this love of mine
said I'm just another lonely lighthouse keeper
trying not to fade away
yes, I'm just another lonely lighthouse keeper
holding on for one more day...

Clarity of Purpose
05:08
|
|||
sometimes I wonder
if I know how to be
sometimes I wonder
if God's smiling on me
the summer sun is
slowly sinking
shadows climbing
up my picket fence
the buzz of a beehive
the crash of a wave
a kettle on the boil
it all gets so intense
a long and lonely season
I try to find the reason
for the mixed up dreams and soliloquies
that keep me company
for a moment
maybe an hour or two
the dark starts creeping
I can't help but think of you
the tide keeps rising
the bees are droning on
I wonder who'll greet me
when I reach Abaddon
the beast is brooding
just like yesterday
all of a sudden
the fog has boiled away
I've got clarity of purpose
and purity of essence
there's no defect in my mind this time
I find deliverance
and I'm free
for a moment
sometimes I wonder

Another Casanova
03:15
|
|||
he tells a killer story
he's got a good rapport
he's full of allegory
he leaves you wanting more
he stares romantically at his cigarette
another Casanova on the line
he takes a swallow from his ice cold beer
what a waste of everybody's time
and when the party's ending
they're shutting off the lights
somehow he's still pretending
he's taking someone home tonight
gestures emphatically with his cigarette
another ladykiller at the bar
goes off to find another ice cold beer
he doesn't know he's taking it too far
he lights another little cigarette
one more Casanova getting by
he kills off another ice cold beer
what a waste of everybody's time

Delle
03:17
|
|||
I won't apologize
for something I don't regret
don't need an alibi
for something I can't remember yet
I don't know what you heard
'bout the lady Delle and her brother Everett
one never says a word
and the other don't discover it
swear to the gods below
I never saw no silhouette
I'll tell you all I know
if you hand me just another cigarette

Everett
06:00
|
|||
I was standing on the corner in my darkest time of need
with a book of empty pages and a pocket full of air
I didn't know how deep the hole that needed filling
and if I knew, I'm sure as hell I didn't care
desperate and cold, I pulled a number from a memory
dropped a quarter in a payphone on the wall
tried my hardest to forget what Delle had told me
I knew I had to give her brother Everett a call
here he come...
quiet for a moment, then Everett ambles over
pulls something from his pocket and puts it in my hand
he turns and tells me that he's happy just to help me
proud to say that he provides a friendly service on demand
come on!
and I found that I was happy then despite the isolation
even with the money gone, I must have had it all
so the next time that you find yourself in need of inspiration
just tell me you'll consider giving Everett a call

My Friend
04:55
|
|||
how can you know
it's time to let go?
I can feel your heart is beating low
close your eyes and let the feeling grow
taking my time
cherish what's mine
another year is just a yesterday
nothing lasts forever anyway
spread your sprouted wings and fly
there's no time to say goodbye
now that you're gone
I try to move on
feel you with me in my dreams at night
in the morning try to hold you tight
church bells ring to start the day
and the feeling fades away
then I stumble out of bed
brush my teeth and clean my head
tell myself that you're still dead
I'm never gonna be with you again
with every new beginning comes an end
and though my broken heart will never mend
I'm glad to say you were my friend
